Civil Engineering Personal Statement Essay Example
I am an enthusiastic civil engineering major student who does possess an excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills as well as technical skills. In addition, I have the ability to develop and maintain mutually beneficial internal and external relationships within any organization as well as being a team player. I also do enjoy being part of, as well as managing, motivating and training, a successful and productive team.
All my life, I have been attracted by how civil engineering has shaped the world around us through buildings, roads, dams, and bridges among others. I have been fascinated by how engineers have been able to lead projects from conception to completion and how such projects have impacted on the communities. I have been determined to make contributions as witnessed in the field of civil engineering projects. To achieve my ambition, I ended up taking a civil engineering course. In my college days, I trained hard both in and out of class in the field of civil engineering.
I have always asked myself, since childhood, how huge buildings and structures were able to stand on their own, how special was the soil or the ground which supported them, and did the civil engineers manage to erect such structures without any problems. I remember when I was a child, I would build my small structures which would collapse immediately when hit by something. This curiosity pushed to wanting to know how structures build by civil engineers never behaved by mine. All this led to the interests in the subject. When I joined my college education in the department of civil engineering and during the holidays, I even did a small research on the soil properties utilizing the little knowledge gained during course work. This further helped expand my knowledge in the subject. Each and every holiday, I make sure that I apply the knowledge gained in course work to do a short research work which has included analysis of structures, material properties, costing of civil structures, and project management. In addition, I always find internships which would help me gain technical experience in preparation for the future work and development. My on and off college activities has shaped my technical skills (CAD drawings, mathematical, physics, and working with maps among others), project management skills, communication skills, creativity, and critical thinking skills which would be key to my progress in the field once through with the studies.
After my undergraduate studies, I plan to pursue a master’s degree in the field of civil engineering especially materials science. In this case, I would have a chance to develop various materials which are cost effective and environmentally fit. Thereafter, I would want to pursue a research based PhD in the same field. With these academic qualifications, I would be able to get a consultant job as well as training in the colleges to pass this knowledge to the next generation. Ultimately, my plan would be to own a one-stop consulting firm dealing with materials in the field of construction and civil engineering. This route would help me make the world a better place as well as earn a good income to support myself and my dependants.
Through my experiences so far, I hope to continue getting more internships and eventual work placement after my studies: undergraduate, masters, and PhD. Eventually, I will pursue my dreams and establish myself as a material science expert and help develop new materials. I also hope to secure scholarships as I expect that it would be very expensive to pay for myself to achieve the planned academic degrees. Finally, I will back to the community in terms of training, offering jobs, and offering scholarships in the field of civil engineering once am established in the field.
