Plan for U.S. Border Security Essay

Security of land and water borders in United States is a critical area that has required close monitoring by all stakeholders involved including the security forces, the political fraternity as well the individual citizens. The land borders in United States still remain the main prone areas to security threats in the country. The safety of the air space is also a growing concern especially with the increased terrorist activities across the world. The American border is composed of over seven thousand miles of land bordering Mexico on the south and Canada on the north as well as a large extension of coastal waters with North Pacific Ocean in the west and North Atlantic Ocean in the east. While these borders are entrance and exit points and important gateways to the world, they pose extreme challenges to the security of United States inform of entry of terrorists, smuggling of drugs, weapons and immigrants who threaten the economic, political and social stability of the nation.

The major security threats in any country begin at the borders in form of illegal infiltration of weapons and drugs to unlawful immigration. Planning for protection of US borders includes addressing all the areas that are threat to the security and safety of people, the economy and social as well as political order (Warner, 2010). The Department of Homeland Security is mandated with ensuring the security of borders through the use of border patrol agents. While the department has employed use of new technologies to enhance security, more resources need to be deployed in form of equipments and increase in the number of personnel. Regular training should be included in the work processes of all individuals involved in border security. This training must focus on new methods to detect border security threats, new methods used by immigrants to smuggle guns, humans and drugs as well as new development in the terrorist activities.

On the other hand, the citizens need to be informed on the responsibilities of the patrol agents and security personnel so that they are vigilant and understand how to react to suspicious activities around the borders. Presently, focus has been on land and sea borders where there have been increased security activities but less involvement of the public in implementing these security strategies. The citizens must be informed of how the security personnel go about tracking people movement in and out of the borders, restraining illegal immigration and reducing drug trafficking. This way, the population can provide recommendation and assistance especially on cartels that exist in these borders without the knowledge of security forces.

The security of land borders should involve protection of the roadways, bridges and tunnels through use of custom offices to control and monitor individuals entering the country. The movement of citizens between United States and near Canada towns in the north should include display of identification documents such as passports or official forms of international travel. While such plans have existed in the most land borders, more customs personnel need to be recruited and ethical work standards promoted among the workforce to reduce corruption. On the other hand, securing the coastal waterways particularly the Pacific and Atlantic borders should focus on controlling illegal smuggling of drugs, weapons as well illegal entry of immigrants who may pose threat to the US security and peace.

The traditional coastal guards must be rejuvenated and boosted with partners such as the federal agencies of Navy and Federal Bureau Investigations (FBI). The Southern Command section of United States should also increase the training and management of the security of US ports and waterways. Similar to securing the land borders, protecting waterways involves use of port customs to control and monitor illegal entry of persons and goods. Therefore, increase in the customs workforce in seas ports and other coastal entry points should be increased as well as sensitize the citizens living around these areas on how to detect and report suspicious activities in the coastal borders.

The responsibility of the Department of Homeland Security should be considered an ever challenging task and therefore be open for suggestions from stakeholders and the public. The department together with the county and national government should reinforce the customs and border protection agencies with new security gadgets such as surveillance cameras, motion detection systems, drones and body scanners as a step towards utilizing technology to improve border security. While the use of the new equipment may push immigrants, terrorists and cartel leaders to devise new methods to penetrate the borders, the border protection agencies and lead security agencies should anticipate these strategies and plan appropriately to foil them.

Notably, the US border security has become a huge concern for the people of America because most of the security threats come through the borders in various forms. Therefore, each stakeholder in the governance, security , economic and political sectors have a duty to engage each other in protecting the nation from illegal immigration, terrorist attacks, entry of guns and drugs and other cross border criminal activities. Every stakeholder should have a workable security plan that enumerates the threat detection measures and how to implement procedures aimed at securing the country and the people from inter border security threats.

Warner (2010) points out that to develop a compete and effective security plan for Americas border security, the nation through the political systems must engage the agencies responsible for border security to understand challenges, resources required and future strategies. One the biggest challenges facing the agencies in border control is the inadequacy of manpower and appropriate resources such as new technologies to anticipate, manage and control borer security threats. To address this and the other problems faced in border security, the government should increase the presence of security agents in the custom offices and ports by revamping the Department of Homeland Security with more experienced agents specifically trained for border patrol and safety. To control and reduce undocumented immigration, the government should likewise increase the capacity of immigration officials who are mandated with removal and detaining illegal immigrants. The border agents should also be equipped with resources to enable them raid areas that are suspicious as well as charge employers considered to be housing illegal immigrants.

Additionally, security upgrades in ports and other entry points along waterways are important to record the entry of every individual and consignments. On the land borders, upgrades on the existing fences to include virtual fencing will help monitoring activities throughout all land borders. That notwithstanding, the use of air surveillance around all water and land borders should be a consideration especially on areas that are prone to terrorism, increased illegal immigration, drug and weaponry trafficking. While all these measures are important in eradicating the current drawbacks in the US border security, there is still the need for political will especially through the congress in establishing and passing laws that will reinforce the border security forces in terms of resource allocation. A nation with secured borders will guarantee continued international trade and cordial and legitimate business relations with neighbors.
