Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a term used to describe social and environmental ethics in business. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can also be described as a concept where companies integrate environmental and social accountability in business operations. Companies that have wide CRS programs are viewed more favorably by the society. CSR aims at balancing economic, social and environmental imperatives. CSR makes a valuable contribution back to the society through charity programs, sponsorships, and philanthropy. Apart from giving back to the society CSR also improves company image and reputation. CSR integrates social and environmental accountability in business giving back to the community and improving companies’ public image.
Role of Corporate Social Responsibility
CSR plays a critical and important role in business, unlike common myths the primary role of CSR is not the promotion of company or brand image and reputation. CSR provides a method for companies to create a positive impact in the society. CSR is a demonstration of appreciation to the society and the environmental. CSR incorporates a wide array of issues in the society, workplace and the environment. Key CSR issues include environmental management, responsible sourcing, and eco-efficiency and stakeholder engagement. CSR also incorporates good governance, anti-corruption measures, gender balance, social equity, human rights, community relations and labor and working conditions (Carroll and Shabana, 2010).
There are two roles of CSR in the business environment to consider. The basic form of corporate social responsibility is social ethics and accountability. Social CSR takes place in the form of donations and charity programs covering areas such as healthcare provision, education, sports, anti-drug campaigns and infrastructure development (Carroll and Shabana, 2010). Example, companies such as Facebook, Microsoft, and IBM have launched education programs globally mainly in developing nations. Similar projects have been launched by Coca-Cola and Pepsi support sports and infrastructure development as part of the CSR. Social accountability enables the companies to create a positive social impact on the consumers who form their consumer base. CSR earns companies a positive image and loyal consumers directly impacting on profitability.
The second role played by CSR brings accountability to the production of goods and services as they relate to the environment, raw materials sourcing, and treatment of employees (Freeman and Hasnaoui, 2010). Business has a responsibility to ensure environmental and labor ethics in production. Environmental responsibility requires companies to utilize safe environmental practices in sourcing, production and disposal of goods. Example, of environmental CSR, includes personal effort to curb carbon emissions and safe disposal of hazardous materials. Similarly, responsible companies do not source materials from areas of with a history of war, terrorism, human exploitation and corruption. CSR also require companies to practice accountability and transparency in operations and block corruption, fraud or discrimination.
CSR governs business production operations and also labor and treatment of employees. Responsible companies ensure safe production of goods and also fair workers treatment including wages, work hours and the work environment (Carroll and Shabana, 2010). Example, Apple has come under criticism due to the use of sweat shops in the production of products in China. An article by the New York Post reported ten suicides in Foxconn, Apples main contractor (Charles and David, 2012). The article also highlights long working hours, gender discrimination, and poor work environment. Since then Apple has launched a strict CSR plan governing the welfare of employees working for its contractors. Overall, Apple is attempting an image repair due to poor CSR practices in the production of iPhones.
In conclusion, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) describes companies’ responsibility towards the society and the environment. Companies have a responsibility to ensure safe and ethical practices in the production of goods and service. Companies also have a responsibility towards the environment by ensuring sustainable practices. Apart from building on company image and reputation CSR benefits the society, environment and employees.
