Discuss why or why not active euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide should be legalized essay.
There has been a growing debate and discussion on the position of active euthanasia and physician assisted suicide in the medical and legal fields. The major issue has been whether the practice should be legalized or not. Legalizing physician-assisted suicide will allow doctors and other medical staff to administer a termination treatment on the patient. This will help the patients to avoid unbearable physical and psychological pain but have a dignified and time death (Jeffrey, 2009). However, such procedures must be administered by consent from the patient and family. Additionally, there are medical cases that cannot be intervened by any medical treatment while the available sustenance methods are becoming more costly and cannot be afforded. Assisting patients to die in such cases should be justified. While assisting death may be considered an unnecessary method, the process includes providing the best medical care as well as compassionate and respect care until that stage that the patient considered assisted termination.
However, legalizing physician assisted death may pose many unprincipled medical doctors and other staff to patients who may abuse the rights of patients. Additionally, doctors who may mistake in their treatment and intervention methods would have an option of recommending euthanasia thus building unethical professionals in the health care industry. Further, legalizing physician assisted death may prompt the government to call for such programs instead of a continued treatment until no more intervention can save the patient. This may happen in public health facilities in a move by government to save finances because assisted death is cheaper than continued treatment.
