When it comes to coaching and consulting, cultural diversity can cause immense frustration and poses a real mystery for the coach and the consultant. However, proper understanding of these differences forms a basis for remarkable growth, learning, and interactions. Getting to integrate effectively the cultural dimension into coaching and consulting is necessary for increasing the validity and the applicability in the current world that is full of intercultural systems. The intercultural environment further presents an opportunity for learning from alternative cultural perspectives in crucial areas like thinking, communication, power, identity, organization among many others. In coaching and consulting cultural diversity, there is need for one to step outside their comfort zone. The aspect requires the coach or the consultant to step boldly outside and experiment and be ready to change some of their behaviors. They are tasked with the duty to engage in more individualized approach to understanding how individuals from different culture develop and the way they hold certain values (Straub, Loch, Evaristo, Karahana, & Strite, 2002). Coaches are supposed to avoid assuming that the clients all hold strongly to certain culturally associated values. In their work coaches and consultants are required to carry out assessments of cultural dimensions and also individual level values related to culture. When the evaluation has been done at individual levels, it can form the basis for making a decision on specific strategies to use in coaching and consulting (Coultas, Bedwell, Burke & Salas, 2015).
In organizations, the operations influenced by values upheld in the organization. Such values heavily rely on the cultural orientation of the members. For coaches dealing with such clients to make meaningful decisions, it’s necessary that an understanding of the decisions they have already made. It’s also required that an understanding of the cultural values of the clients exists. When there is no understanding and where a difference between cultures exists, increased resistance by the client is likely to take place. It’s important to note that Western cultures typically tend to be highly rational and tend to value things that meet an existing need. Their cultures also value individualism and competitiveness. Other cultures, on the other hand, tend to emphasize on patience, a sense of togetherness and getting along with others. Additionally, other cultures value privacy and direct authority (‘Multicultural Consulting’, n.d.).
