Language deficiencies like Aphasia are major incumbent to literacy development. Language is the medium through ideas in written and oral form are expressed and understood thus deficiency in language means that one is incapable of grasping concepts and arguments put forth as well as put their own ideas in a form that is universally explicable. Most language skills are acquired in the elementary level of education and children who experience difficulties in mastering any of the skills carry the deficiency with them to higher levels of education thus negatively impacting on their success in the academic sphere
Language deficiencies retard emotional development and cause psychological trauma because one is burdened by the inability to share thoughts and ideas and also express his emotions. Literacy development is a complex process highly dependent on the use of the mind to understand and retain concepts introduced. This requires a stable, receptive mind free from any negative internal or external influences so that it will be possible to focus the entire energy to learning new skills and improving on those already existent, ultimately conquering the seemingly insurmountable task of comprehensive literacy development.
Literacy development is also to a large extent influenced by the age at which a child commences formal schooling .A large percentage of children in developing countries start going to school relatively older as compared to their counterparts in developed countries. Language skills need to be ardently cultivated at young age so that they can be firmly rooted in the metal faculties. Young children also show a higher aptitude and interest in learning language concepts as compared to older children .This means that children in developed counties who join school when young may have a higher success rate at developing their language capability and attaining advanced literacy levels.
The English language has rapidly become the universally acceptable language of commerce and business relations. Literacy levels have come to be defined by how well one is able to read, write speak and understand the English language. There are many countries that do not speak English as the first language and in these populations there may be many people not proficient in the language and would thus deemed illiterate judging by global standards. It is therefore important to appreciate the role of language ability or disability on literacy development.
