IEP stands for individualized education program. It’s written for a child with a disability that is developed, reviewed, and revised in a meeting in keeping with certain requirements of law and regulations. It is made to set annual goals and to state the special education and related services and supplementary aids and services that the public agency will provide to, or on behalf of, the child. Each IEP has the following sections:
Present levels which determine how well the student is doing currently in class. Annual goals which are set based on the child’s needs. Benchmark or short term objectives which are required only for children with disabilities who take alternate assessments aligned to alternate achievement standards Measuring and reporting progress determines how progress towards annual goals will be measured Special Education states the special education that will be provided to the child Related services are areas where the child may need extra help Supplementary Aids and Services aid in a child’s performance Program Modifications for School Personnel includes modifiers that can/will be provided Extent of Non-Participation includes explanation of the extent to which the child will not participate with nondisabled children in the regular class and in other school settings and activities Accommodations in Assessment deals with students having to take assessments and whether or not the IEP team thinks the student needs accommodations Service Delivery determines when the child when will receive services Transition Planning determines designing plans to transition to post-secondary school Age of Majority deals with a statement that the student has been told about the rights (if any) that will transfer to him or her at age of majority The family plays a big role in the IEP process. They would need to be present in every meeting to make sure that their students’ needs are being met. They also need to be apart of helping create the IEP. They should be able to monitor progress with their child throughout the year.
