Internal Combustion Engine Essay Paper:
The discovery of the internal combustion engine shaped the future of the world and also impacted on war and transportation. Steam engines were the main mode of transport before discovery of the wheel. The discovery of the invention of the internal combustion engine revolution the mobility of people, warfare and trade.
Karl Benz invented the first combustion engine in 1885. Henry Ford improved the engine to made the internal combustion available for automobiles in the commercial market. The internal combustion engine, therefore, revolutionized the mobility of people, goods and also war. Ganesan (2012) notes that the internal combustion revolutionized all aspects of people’s life’s including transportation, goods and also cultural interaction. The combustion engine and the production of automobiles by the Ford Company impacted also in the creation of employment. It also led to other developments in iron smelting, wheel and improvement of electrical works and infrastructure such as tarmacked roads (Ganesan, 2012).
The invention of the internal combustion engine impacted heavily on three main areas that are transportation, war and development of infrastructure mainly termed roads. The steam engines running trains created a big impact in the transportation of goods across states. However, the movement of the train was limited and goods had to be transported further by horses. The steam engine was too big to be installed in vehicle. The internal combustion engine, therefore, revolutionized the mobility of people and goods into isolated communities (Ganesan, 2012). Mobility of people led to the commercialization of the engine and their subsequent affordable cost was acceptable the middle class. British Broadcasting Corporation notes in its education site that the internal combustion engine was so popular that no more horses were found on the streets of London (British Broadcasting Corporation,n.d.).
The internal combustion engine created a big impact during the first and Second World War. The advancements in the engine facilitated the creation of military vehicles, tanks boats and even propeller engines for planes. According to the Imperial War Museum the internal combustion engine enabled Britain to build the first tank in the First World War. The British and the French managed to defeat the German force during the First World War. The internal combustion engine and the availability of gasoline was crucial advantage in the war. The Germans later built an advanced tank from earlier British designs which gave them an edge during the Second World War (Matt, 2015). The advancement of the internal combustion engine played a bigger role in the deployment of forces. Trucks used to carry and deploy soldiers during the Second World War utilized combustion engines (Matt, 2015).
The internal combustion engine also impacted on trade, economic development, infrastructural development, airplane manufacture and cultural interactions (Clayton, 2002). The combustion engine facilitated people mobility and thus cultural interactions and exchanges. A bigger impact of the development of the internal combustion engine was in economic development especially in regards to the creation of employment opportunities in organizations. Goods carried across states by the train were transported to customers and distributors by automobiles. Internal combustion vehicles were faster than horses and goods and services arrived in the markets as expected. Finally, with the development of vehicles better roads were required. Internal combustion engines, therefore, directly impacted on the infrastructural development (Crayton, 2002).
