What is the HCUP?
The HCUP is the greatest data collection of multi-year, all-payer State data organizations, private data organizations and hospital associations which includes inpatient and picked outpatient data that is primarily based on the hospital charging record. HCUP is the family of health care databases, relevant tools and products developed via a Federal State Industry partnership and sponsored by the AHRQ.
Objectives of HCUP’s:

  1. Build and improve an effective source of state, national, and all-payer health care data.
  2. Develop a wide set of database, tools and products.
  3. With statewide data organizations greatly enhance a collaborative partnership.
  4. Improve health care by conducting and translating research information.

HCUP Databases:
Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS): The NIS is a federal database of the hospital inpatient stays which is the biggest all-payer inpatient care database in the US. It consists of data from 5 to 8 million hospital stays. Policymakers and Researchers use this data to identify, monitor, and investigate trends in health care consumption, charges, access, outcomes and quality.
Kids’ Inpatient Database (KID): The KID is a distinctive, countrywide database of the hospital inpatient stays for children. This was exclusively designed to allow researchers to research a wide range of procedures and conditions connected to child health issues.
Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS): The NEDS is a distinctive and strong database which yields national reports of emergency department visits. It is the biggest all-payer emergency department database in the United States which consists of almost 26 million records for ED visits. It allows analyses of ED consumption patterns and supports of the public health experts, policymakers, clinicians and administrators in their selection regarding this critical resource of health care.
State Inpatient Databases (SID): The SID is the hospital inpatient databases. The SID consists of the world of the inpatient release abstracts in the participating the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project States, interpreted into an even format to facilitate multi-state analyses and comparisons. Policymakers and Researchers use the SID data to investigate issues and identify trends distinctive to one State, to compare and contrast the data from two or more States.
Tools of HCUP:
HCUPnet: It provides quick access to the most significant set of publicly available, all-payer health care data source. This is a free, online inquiry system primarily based on data from the HCUP that enables users to create the tables and graphs of the national and the regional statistics on the hospital inpatient and the emergency department consumption. Its consist of some information which includes the numbers and rates of the inpatient stays and ED visits, charges, deaths, breakdowns, and trends by the patient and the hospital characteristics.
AHRQ Quality Indicators (QIs): this tools use to measures the health care quality which use healthcare facility inpatient administrative data and can be used to emphasize potential characteristic concerns, identify areas which need further analysis and track modifications over time.
Chronic Condition Indicator: it offers users an easy way to classify the ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes into one of two classes which are chronic or not chronic. This tool can also use to classify the ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes into one of eighteen body system.
Clinical Classifications Software (CCS): The CCS is the classification systems that set ICD-9-CM diagnoses and types of procedures into a minimal number of medically meaningful categories. This tools are also available for ICD-10 diagnoses, HCPCS and CPT procedures, and ICD-9-CM diagnoses associated to mental health and ingredient use.
