Is Organic Food Really Better for Us?

This paper is explores organic food and whether it is really better for us. Initially, organic food was only available in health food stores but this has changed over the years and it is now found in nearly all supermarkets. Consumers now face a dilemma when the shop for produce. They have to choose between traditionally grown produce and the organic options. The former is more affordable but the latter is perceived to be better for us. There has been a lot of effort to spread the view that organic is synonymous with nutritious.
Organic food is grown using natural fertilizers and pesticides therefore consumers are exposed to fewer chemicals compared to conventionally grown produce. This is one of the reasons why most people conclude that organic food is healthier (Mayo Clinic, 2012). However, the chemicals found in conventionally grown produce are within acceptable limits. There is an assumption that organic food is healthier because it contains more nutrients but this is not the case. Organic and conventionally grown produce offer similar nutrients. There is no doubt that organic food production has minimal impact on the environment because of absence of chemicals but the idea that it offers more nutrients is debatable (Kalt, 2012).
