Language Arts Development in Elementary-Aged Children Essay:
Acquiring the six language art skills is paramount for the healthy development of any child. A child who goes through life without grasping any of these concepts is usually hampered from attaining his full potential and experiences insurmountable challenges even upon reaching adulthood. It is therefore imperative for these skills to be emphasized upon and cultivated at a tender age.
Reading involves the interpretation and comprehension of symbols that comprise a language. At the elementary level, children are just commencing the journey of reading and will start with simple words that they can easily associate with due to their frequency in usage in everyday life. Bearing this in mind, concepts of reading will be introduced systematically as suits the ages of the learners in question and to aid the process, brightly colored texts can be used to capture the attention and imagination of the learners.
Writing often succeeds reading and learners are required to grasp elevated concepts involving writing especially the syntax governing the language (Roe & Ross, 2006). The learners at elementary level with time and practice become adept at correctly forming simple sentences using a combination of words.
Speaking is an essential element of speech development. Effective speaking requires children at the elementary level to be taught a variety of words that will come in handy when speaking. They also need to learn how to form correct tenses and also use tone of voice to correctly convey their message.
Listening forms the framework through which the other language skills can be grasped. Researchers suggest that this is the initial skill gained by a child at the formative stage (Roe & Ross, 2006). Through listening the child is able to associate sounds with words and thus relate to the complex world around him.
Viewing is performed by the sensory organ of sight coupled with the ability to make correct interpretations of the image presented to the mind. Children at elementary level need to be taught how to perform an in depth study of the images presented to them so that they are able to discover the underlying meaning. This will be an invaluable tool that will in the future assist them in decision-making.
Transfer of information into drawings and pictures is termed as visually representing. Elementary children are able to display the extent of their knowledge through visual representations of concepts learnt and with a lot of guidance and encouragement, they are able to steadily improve and communicate their ideas effectively. Each of the six language art skills is important on its own but they work together to form a formidable force.
