Song Cycles: ‘what was the artist trying to express, depict or portray through the conceptualization of the album?’ looking at Green Day’s American Idiot.
“The focus of the project will be to look at American Idiot with the perspective of its historical and cultural implications. The guiding question is, ‘what was the artist trying to express, depict or portray through the conceptualization of the album?’ ”
The aim of the project is to look at three things. First, the evolution of the song cycle over time, second talk about punk culture and punk rock music and third put American Idiot into context of the previous two by looking at how it falls under the category of a song cycle(a concept album being a form of a song cycle) by incorporating features of a song cycle or concept album, while also keeping fixed in its punk roots. Textual analysis and musical analysis is to be included with more importance to the former.
